How to Spot a Good Dim Sum Menu
A good dim sum menu helps diners understand preparation method and rhythm.
Signals to look for
| Signal | What it means |
|---|---|
| Preparation sections | Steamed, fried, baked, rice rolls, congee, sweets. |
| Classic items | Har gow, siu mai, char siu bao, cheung fun, turnip cake, egg tart. |
| Tea service | Tea is treated as part of the meal. |
| Freshness cues | Items are not all treated as identical reheated snacks. |
| Dietary clarity | Shrimp, pork, wheat, egg, and shared steamers can be explained. |
| Ordering path | New diners can build a balanced first order. |
Use with caution
A menu is evidence, not proof. A restaurant may have strong food and a weak website, or a polished menu and weak kitchen execution. Use the menu as an ordering tool, not a complete verdict.
